2009-03-22 | REOR

The tradition of joint celebration by representatives of various Local Orthodox Churches on the first Sunday of Lent is quite widespread in many cities in Europe. In Strasbourg with its residents from Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania, it is already a third year that the Orthodox clergy gather together for common prayer conducted by turn in each parish church.
This year the Sunday of Orthodoxy celebration took place at the Serbian church of St. George the Conqueror. It was led by Hegumen Philaret Bulekov, Moscow Patriarchate Representative to the Council of Europe and rector of the Russian parish in Strasbourg. Rectors and clerics from Greek, Romanian, Serbian, Georgian and French Orthodox parishes concelebrated. A great number of the faithful in Strasbourg attended and took communion during the Divine Liturgy, which was celebrated in French and Slavonic.
After the service, Father Philaret addressed the congregation. He pointed to the special importance of common witness to Orthodoxy in the modern secularized society and support to be given to catechetical and missionary projects undertaken in each parish. The Russian Orthodox representative expressed warm thanks to the concelebrating clergy and stressed the need to develop and foster the tradition of common worship and to introduce the faithful to the life and work of other Orthodox parishes. >>>

Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill - to Mr. Luis Maria de Puig, President of the Parliament Assembly of the Council of Europe: The center of Europe saw barbaric events and the wounds inflicted by them have not been healed to this day

2009-03-22 | REOR

On March 17 it will be five years since the tragic events in 2004 in Kosovo and Metohija. On that day, nationalistic extremists began anti-Serbian pogroms that led to mass violations of human rights, hundreds of victims, flows of refugees and the destruction of dozens of churches and monasteries in the region.

We appreciate the Council of Europe's programs for restoring some of the ruined shrines. However, we are aware that the scale of destruction requires ever greater efforts from the entire civilized world. >>>

Strasbourg court's judgment in the case of schismatics versus Bulgarian State and responses to it

2009-02-07 | REOR

"The Bulgarian Orthodox Church has been bewildered by and extremely dissatisfied with the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg over the ungrounded and unjust claims of persons who have fallen away from the unity of the Church".

By its judgment published on 22 January 2009 the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg awarded 8000 euros to the so-called "alternative synod" of "Metropolitan" Innokentiy, the Bulgarian media have reported.

On 6 February 2009, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia had a meeting with the Bulgarian President Geogri Parvanov at his residence in St. Daniel's monastery in Moscow. In the course of the meeting the Bulgarian president expressed hope that His Holiness Patriarch Kirill would give his assessment to the European Court of Human Right's judgment, published on 22 January 2009, which partly supported the claims of the schismatics who had separated themselves from the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

Sharing the opinion of the Bulgarian president concerning the great significance of the Strasbourg Court's judgment for further development of international relations, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia assured Mr. Parvanov of the readiness of the Russian Orthodox Church to support the stand taken by the Bulgarian state and the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
